Chapter 1 - Julikana Tano

-1-

It is Four o’clock in the afternoon. The day is bright. A woman is walking on the side of the street entering a Florida university campus. She’s in her mid-thirties, she is black. She is well dressed and looks very professional. Her slim petite figure is walking slowly. She appears calm and serene. She looks over to the garden side where several students are seated and studying together. She seems disturbed now. As if she cannot find whomever she came looking for.
Behind her, a police car is driving slowly, almost silently.
Inside the car, officers Luis and Dave are quietly observing the woman.
“Is that her?” asks Officer Luis, speaking on the radio.
“Yes, that’s her”, answer in unison the voices of four college students seated in another police car, a few feet away, driven by lady officer Charlie.
Officer Luis stops the car engine and parks. His partner Dave steps out of the car and walks toward the woman.
“Excuse-me miss, we would like to speak with you, if you can please come with us” politely says the officer.
“Hello officer, what is this about?” asks the woman, intrigued but very calm.
“We need to ask you a few questions about a stalking complaint filed against you by some students on this campus. Please come with us to the station and help us clarify the situation” says Officer Dave in the most diplomatic yet firm tone.
She follows him and peacefully enters the car where Officer Luis greets her.
Both police cars drive out of the university campus heading to the nearby Police Department Headquarters.
The woman remains quiet during the ride to the police station, thinking deeply to herself.
It’s ironic how I will be interrogated like a criminal today. I never was one and I never will be. Many have been criminals but will never get interrogated nor will they ever face the responsibility of their transgressions. But it’s fair, I am ready for this”.
